Final - Temperature and Weather Condition Generator
My Group and I wrote a program in Processing which allowed you to type in any city/town throughout the world to get the current temperature and weather conditions in the city. The program utilized code from Temboo in order to receive live weather data from Yahoo Weather, although we had to alter the code in order to read and respond to whatever place a user entered. The original plan for the project was to make the weather condition of the selected city to appear on a map, although this proved quite difficult and far too time consuming to accomplish as we also ran into issues with Temboo uses. Once you typed in your city, the program would display temperature and weather conditions on a screen which was colored based on if the temperature was hot, mild, or cold. Our program effectively created a systematic connection between the user, Temboo, Yahoo Weather and natural weather processes.
Social Media Usage and Global Happiness
The map below displays the most popular form of social media in 40 select countries and the percentage of its population using it.
The percentage of the population using social media is displayed by the size of the icons. Specific information can be found by clicking on these icons. Countries of particular interest include Japan, China, Sierra Leone and Mali.

Using internet and social media usage statistics from the countries, I found the percentage of people using both the internet and social media for each country. The map below compares this percentage with the world happiness ranking. Countries in the top half are marked with a happy face and countries in the bottom half are marked by sad face icons. The percentage of people both on the internet and using social media is shown by the size of the face icons. China and Finland are particularly interesting cases as Finland has low social media usage and ranks the highest in happiness while China has more social media users than internet users and ranks much lower in happiness.

Social Media SystemUsing a predator prey relationship, I looked to model the harsh realities of social media and mental health. Heavy social media users who make their lives look incredibly vicarious yet may face mental health issues are shown by the red sad faces while average happier people are modeled by the yellow smiley face.
As people create more and more posts that create the illusion that there life is better than it actually may be (some even posting photos from trips years ago to make it appear as though they are constantly up to something interesting), more people feel inadequate, experience a decline in mental health, and mimic the actions of others on social media to gain approval and make themselves feel better. Like all trends, this social media bubble is bound to burst, especially as more people began to realize the effect on mental health that it is having. I feel that we may see a departure from heavy social media usage in our lifetimes, or social media feeds filled with honest positivity.

Hippie Chick Business TreeThis is a tree diagram for the potential business model of an alcoholic beverage created by a friend of mine and I that we dubbed the "Hippie Chick". The original version of the drink included berry kombucha, cucumber slices and cucumber tequila. We are planning to introduce/test it at the bar at Smiling Moose (which my friend manages), if this is successful we will look at finding a distributor to pick it up to help us can and distribute the drink. If you see "Hippie Chick" in your local liquor store, grab some flower power in a can and enjoy!
